Portion of W. Union down to one lane until Friday

Traffic on West Union Street between Elliotsville Road and Morrison Elementary School, 793. W. Union, will be reduced to a single lane one more day than planned because of weather-related issues.

The half-mile stretch was initially intended to be reduced to one lane only Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to repair a guardrail.

Curt Mayle, streets supervisor for the Athens, delayed the repairs on Thursday because of  rain, according to a news release.

Mayle said in a previous interview that the section of West Union is mostly used by university students and parents driving their kids to and from school, as well as the city’s school buses.

Sharon Ervin, director of transportation services for Athens City Schools, said that the school buses have not experienced any delays because of the lane closure and she does not mind the project being extended until Friday afternoon.

“Our drivers just go with the flow,” Ervin said. “They haven’t said anything about being late.”

Motorists should expect some delays, however, and traffic will be flagged accordingly throughout the project, according to a previous release from the city.
