Men's Golf: Career bests carry Bobcats to a 4th place finish at Ball State

With a fourth-place finish at the Earl Yestingmeier Memorial Invitational, Ohio swung itself into an area it wasn’t quite familiar with this season.

Multiple Bobcats posted career highs, as after finishing in the bottom-half of the leaderboards in prior tournaments, Ohio’s main three of Peyton White, Andrew Mlynarski and Phil Giesker topped the standings at Ball State’s annual tournament.

We had a few guys who really played solid this week,” White said. “That should give everybody a little bit of momentum heading into the MACs. It’s a good boost for sure.”

White was the medalist for Ohio, as he accumulated his fifth top-20 finish of his career and tied for 11th. He finished with a three-round score of 223.

Junior Andrew Mlynarski, who ranked second on Ohio’s leaderboards, finished with a career-high in 13th place at the Delaware Country Club. He shot 14-over-par and posted a three-round score of 224.

Pittsburgh native Thomas Leech matched Mlynarski’s mark of a 224. His second round of 72 was a career-best as a Bobcat, while senior Phil Giesker tied for 18th and his second top-20 finish of his career. His third round score of 74 was the best for Ohio.

Sophomore’s Michael Engelman and Brad Burgess both finished in the top-40, as Engelman posted his first top-30 finish of his career.

Freshman Ty Herriott rounded out the Bobcats, as he moved up ten spots to finish tied for 44th. Herriott’s 44th place finish was also a career-high.

Mlynarski said the team’s momentum is riding high as there are about eight guys battling for positioning in Ohio’s rotation of five golfers.

“I think guys realized this was their last chance to really show what they got before we narrow it down,” Mlynarski said. “A lot of guys stepped up today and think some of us realized the magnitude of this tournament.”

In the three prior tournaments Ohio had failed to garner a top-half finish and Mlynarski said that this tournament gave the Bobcats plenty of confidence going into Mid-American Conference play.

“Golf is all about confidence,” Mlynarski said. “We’ve shown spurts of it here and there this season, but we got tons of momentum from our six guys playing well.”

MAC opponent Toledo captured its first title of its season, as tournament medalist and sophomore Otto Black hit a hole-in-one during the second round.

Ohio will tee off against Toledo again in ten days for the MAC Tournament.

“They are beatable,” Mlynarski said. “We are definitely capable of beating them.”
