Guaranteed tuition given green light

The Ohio Board of Regents approved Ohio University’s plan to offer a flat tuition rate to students over a period of four years.

The plan, dubbed the “OHIO Guarantee” by OU, will allow the university to advertise to incoming students its tuition and fee costs over four years. It will start in Fall Semester 2015.

“We’re looking at innovative ways to make college more affordable. We support the strategy in this way,” said John Carey, chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.

The Board of Regents worked with the university to put together the plan, which was approved by legislators in the state’s operating budget. The university’s Board of Trustees approved the plan in January.

“People will be watching to see how this works,” Carey said.

Other state community colleges are considering adopting a similar plan, such as the Cuyahoga Community College in Northeast Ohio, Carey said.

“Our plan, which is new to Ohio University, was developed as a way to provide better financial predictability to students and parents, increase the value of financial aid and provide an incentive for students to graduate within four years,” OU President Roderick McDavis, said in a news release.
