Editorial: Aiding Athens series returns with 5 new nonprofit profiles

The front pages of The Post are going to look a bit unusual this week.

As today’s edition illustrates, we’ll be running fewer stories on Page 1 in order to give more space to a springtime tradition called Aiding Athens. It’s a week-long series that profiles philanthropic organizations around Athens that work selflessly to better the world around them.

This will be the third time we’ve run the series, and each time is an eye-opening experience. Ohio University is nestled in the hills of Appalachia, where need can be great even five minutes outside the campus bubble.

Without nonprofits like those we’ve profiled, many of those needs would go unmet. Pantries would remain bare, polluted environments would go uncleaned and the mentally challenged would flounder without education, employment and care. Fulfilling those needs is a constant challenge for the organizations. We want to tell their stories.

Each of the five installments of Aiding Athens will feature a centerpiece story in print, as well as slideshows, videos or other multimedia online. Each medium tells a different part of an organization’s story in a different way, so we encourage you to interact with all of it.

Reporters, photographers, videographers and editors have been working diligently for more than a month to find and tell these stories. We would like to recognize their work, and we are very excited about the results.

Of course, telling the story is the easy part. These organizations and volunteers work tirelessly to feed, clean and house those in need. They are the true focus of the series — we applaud their efforts and celebrate their successes.

Information about each nonprofit’s needs will accompany the profiles. Changing the world requires resources, so if you connect with the mission of one (or all) of the organizations, we encourage you to consider volunteering your time and resources to furthering its cause.
