Track & Field: Ohio takes another trip down south

The Bobcats, who thought they escaped Black and Gold after the Wake Forest Invitational last weekend, will return south to Nashville, Tenn. this weekend to participate in the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

After showing a career performance last weekend, senior javelin thrower Lauren McCullough is ready to hit the track again and show why neither she nor the Mid-American Conference should be overlooked.

“She gave us a big performance last weekend,” coach Clay Calkins said. “We have her down as a premier athlete.”

Calkins believes she has the capabilities of finishing in the top 20 of her event.

Another athlete is a source of team points the Bobcats look forward to — Donyelle Brown.

Brown, who already has a recorded MAC-qualifying toss in the discus-throwing event, hopes to continue to elevate her skill level with each meet. Last weekend she finished 14th with a throw of 37.17 meters.

“She had a great meet,” Calkins said. “As you saw last weekend, she was great at the hammer throw.”

Calkins referred to her performance last weekend as, “scratching the surface.” He and his assistant coaches hope for impressive meets from her the rest of the season. They are all confident that she can and will do it.

Brown had a few meets where she was just off, but she rebounded and did it with determination. Nothing different is expected this season, according to the staff.

Up-and-coming sophomore Peyton Adkins also hopes to pick up where she left off last week and fight her way toward a MAC-qualifying bid.

“She is doing really good right now,” Calkins said. “We need her to keep improving and stay healthy.”

Calkins went on to say that as long as Adkins stays healthy, he expects to see nothing but improvement from her to continue the season.

Junior Chanda Cuckler will be sitting out this weekend, so Calkins is looking to his stars Brown, McCullough and Adkins to rack up points for the Bobcats in Nashville.
