Athens City Council President Jim Sands was rushed to the Grant Medical Center in Columbus by helicopter following a fall this morning, Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said in a Facebook post Wednesday. Sands was apparently diagnosed with a fractured vertebrae.
Thomas Armstrong, an employee at the Athens Flower Shop where Sands is a part-owner, said that Sands was initially taken to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens Wednesday morning after he found him with a gash over his left eye and further head injuries.
Sands received a CT scan, which revealed that he had suffered no internal bleeding, though doctors remain concerned about the trauma to his head, back, and shoulders, Armstrong said in a message to the sheriff.
Though the only diagnoses now is the fractured vertebrae, Armstrong said doctors are unsure whether this is a new or old break.
According to Athens Flower Shop’s website, the shop will be closed until Monday due to Sands’ medical issues.
