OU student sentenced on drug charges

An Ohio University student who pleaded guilty to two drug charges last month appeared in the Athens County Common Pleas Court for a sentencing hearing Monday.

Kameron Rubin, 21, pleaded guilty Jan. 10 to an indictment charging one count of aggravated trafficking and one count of aggravated possession of drugs, felonies of the second and fifth degrees respectively.

Rubin was sentenced to five years of community control and a six-month license suspension and will be subject to random substance abuse monitoring, among other standards, according to court documents.

Rubin admitted to possessing and selling a form of ecstasy from his 17 W. Washington St. apartment, which is located above Donkey Coffee and within 1,000 feet of Athens Middle School.

The Athens County Prosecutor’s Office had no evidence indicating that Rubin sold drugs to middle school students or on the school’s property.

“On or about (Feb. 1, 2013, Rubin) unlawfully did knowingly sell or offer to sell ... 4-methylethcathinone from his apartment,” according to court documents. “The amount of the drug involved equals or exceeds the bulk amount but is less than five times the bulk amount.”

Documents also state that Rubin obtained $6,280 from his drug offenses and apparently used it to buy more drugs.

The $6,280 that was seized during the police investigation will be forfeited: 30 percent will go to the Athens Police Department, 30 percent will go to the OU Police Department and the remaining 40 percent will go to an Athens County Prosecutor’s Office fund.
