Local man pleads guilty to charges of burglary

A local man pleaded guilty in a Thursday court hearing to burglary charges and was ordered to pay a $45,000 fine, among other consequences.

Kevin Morris, 41, pleaded guilty to an indictment charging aggravated burglary, robbery, theft and theft of drugs and was sentenced immediately after entering the new plea. He originally pleaded not guilty at his Dec. 18 arraignment.

Since Dec. 6, he has been incarcerated in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on a bond of $75,000 and was ordered to avoid contact with the alleged victims. He could now face 22 years in the jail, could pay a fine of $45,000 and is ordered to five years of post-release control.

Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn could not be reached for comment by press time regarding the drugs that Morris attempted to steal, whether he knew the residents of the home and where the incident took place.

According to court documents, law enforcement officials will perform post sentence investigation. Morris is remanded to the custody of Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly’s department to be transported to prison.
