Today I’m putting makeup aside to tackle a very important and serious issue that has recently turned the fashion world upside down: Kimye’s Vogue cover. Vogue released its April issue on March 21 featuring soon-to-be-wed Kanye West and Kim Kardashian in an adorable pose on the front cover, and ever since, the Internet has been abuzz with (mostly negative) opinions about it.
To those who might be wondering why this cover caused such a stir, let me break it down for you: Haters are going to hate, and right now they hate that Vogue felt the rapper-and-reality-star duo were deserving of a cover. The iconic fashion magazine has a history of running strictly supermodels on its cover, but gradually began to feature ‘’it” girls and actresses under creative license of Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour — a business move I agree with, because they are just as influential in the fashion industry as the supermodels themselves.
I have been reading through people’s ignorant tweets that label Kimye as “trashy,” “disgusting,” “degenerate idiots” and claim that they only did the cover to make money off baby North West, and it has been getting me heated.
Whether or not you think Kim and Kanye deserve their fame, it doesn’t change the fact that they are famous. It doesn’t change the fact that fashion-industry icon Wintour thought their presence on the cover of her magazine was justified.
Being on the cover of Vogue is a huge deal. It symbolizes that he or she is iconic, influential and has had a substantial impact on our culture — whether within the fashion industry or not. And, according to the Internet, many people think Kim and Kanye do not fit that criteria. People hate on Kim’s fame all the time; yes, she had a sex tape; yes, her family has a reality show; and yes, she used to be bossed around by Paris Hilton. But, she’s famous nonetheless and, in my opinion, she’s fabulous too.
Do I think Kim’s road to fame was desirable and that other girls should follow in her footsteps? No. But I think she is still an iconic figure in popular culture and the fashion industry. So is Kanye. He might be the only person in history to be called a jackass by the president and he might have interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance of Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, but together they are a power couple that oozes fame, fortune and fashion — and that’s what warrants a cover on a magazine as seminal as Vogue. The cover says it itself with the hashtag #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple.
Those who appear on the coveted cover are hand-picked with the notion that their appearance will sell the most issues of the magazine and, since this is possibly the most controversial cover that Vogue has ever had, I think it has done just that. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that whether you like it or not,
Kim and Kanye are too glam to give a damn.
