A rainy day for Palmer Fest; arrests down about 40 percent from previous year

The dark, cloud-covered skies that poured rain all afternoon Saturday tamed but couldn't stop the beast that is Palmer Fest, where 33 people were arrested by law enforcment officers during Athens infamous party.

Compared to the 55 arrests last year, according to a previous Post article, that's about 40 percent fewer arrests.

The parties began at 11 a.m. and most house parties were over by 5:30 p.m., according to a city news release that stated "a number" of the parties were shut down for violating the city's nuisance party law.

The rain would keep up throughout the afternoon but police saw "a significant number of people" present throughout the daytime hours.

Athens Police arrested five people, mostly on acohol related offences. Ohio University Police arrested seven people on nine charges during the event.

As usual, the bulk of the arrests were by the Ohio Investigative Unit, a division of the state Department of Public Safety that has undercover liqour agents on the look out for underage drinking and other violations. The unit arrested 21 people, mostly on alchohol related offenses though the city's news release noted one felony drug related arrest.

The Athens Fire Department did not respond to any calls in the area.
