Unlike in years past, two sibling police agencies did not have much to discuss after this past weekend.
Ohio University’s Sibs Weekend occurred from Feb. 7 to 9 with few reported incidents, Athens Police and OUPD officials said.
The OUPD blotter lists four alcohol and one drug-related incident from the weekend, and Athens Police reports show 11 arrests, three of which involved alcohol. However, an Athens police official said there might be some additional reports that have yet to be made available to file in the system.
“Sibs weekend has been a declining event in terms of police issues,” Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers said. This year was not much different from an average weekend.”
He added that the weekend’s activity was not noticeably higher, and there were no particularly noteworthy incidents to speak of.
“No sibs gave us any particular problems, as far as I know,” Powers said.
Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle agreed, saying the weekend was fairly similar to any other one during the winter.
“I would say, based on what I’ve seen in the reports, it was less busy than years past for sibs weekend, and that’s a good thing,” Pyle said.
He added that his department did not increase their patrolling of the uptown area during the weekend.
“I have reports that the sibs were much, much younger and that probably had an impact on what took place over the weekend,” Pyle said. “So nothing really extraordinary for us.”
