The weekend before finals week, Ohio is hoping that its series with Kent State isn’t the finale of its seven-game winning streak.
This weekend, the Bobcats (16-4-1) will travel to Kent State, which owns a 6-12 record and sits one spot above the basement of the league.
Ohio is currently riding the momentum of a seven-game win streak and sits at second behind Iowa State (19-5-2) in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League standings.
“(Kent State) hasn’t had the best season, but they have a new coach and a new team,” coach Jonathon Sheridan said. “They can surprise you if you take them lightly, and like I said, they have a new coach … we just have to keep it going and not take it lightly.”
Kent State coach Nate Morang stepped into the role during the offseason and has been helping the team in various ways, including a focus on strength
and conditioning.
While Kent State continues to seek overall success, Ohio is off to its best start in several years.
Not only did the Bobcats start the season strong, but they have also continued that trend through the season up to this point.
Last weekend at Indiana, the Bobcats won both games and outscored the Hoosiers 15-4. The previous weekend, Ohio outscored rival Lindenwood 12-7 and took both games, as well.
The team has shown a potent offensive attack, as it has scored a season total of 102 goals, but the ’Cats defense has been equally as impressive by allowing a mere total of 46 goals against in just 21 games.
“I think we’re a deep team,” Sheridan said. “I like (for the team) to dictate the play… I don’t like to single out guys because it’s not good for the team, but we like to play our game and to make opponents adjust to us.”
This will be Ohio’s last road series of the calendar year, and so Sheridan would like to see the team end on a winning note. However, he stressed that one series does not dictate the season.
“I think it’s very important to end on a winning note, but one weekend doesn’t make your year,” he said. “It’s important to keep the ball rolling in the right direction… We just have to keep playing better than (the previous weekend) and play for the win.”
