Post Editorial: Issues, races on ballot require voter action

Today is the first Tuesday of November, and, just like every year, the polls are open for Election Day.

Though this election doesn’t boast a presidential race like last year’s, it is as important as ever that you get out and vote.

Tuesday’s ballot here in Athens features three issues. The first is a proposed tax levy replacement, and though Issues 2 and 3 concern your electricity and how you pay for it, only one issue will count.

According to the Athens County Board of Elections site, per the Ohio Revised Code, Issue 2 was not to appear on the ballot in Athens’ city precincts, and thus a vote either way won’t be counted.

Issue 3, though, concerns the city joining with its citizens to purchase natural gas and/or electricity, which would give the city control to sell the resource at a lower cost.

In addition to that triad of issues, Athens residents will decide on who will make up the at-large seats for Athens City Council. Voters will also decide who sits on the Athens City School District’s Board of Education and who will be the next township trustee.

If you failed to register to vote this time around, we encourage you to let today stand as a reminder to register now so as to be able to vote next time around.

Former first lady, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton once said, “Voting is the most precious right of every citizen, and we have a moral obligation to ensure the integrity of our voting process.”

So flip to page three to see where to find your polling location, and get out there and vote.
