The second year of college brings a sense of comfort, new knowledge and for some, more artistic expression.
The Ohio University School of Art and Design will present an exhibition featuring the art of second year graduate students in the Masters of Fine Arts program.
“The second-year show is really interesting to see because everyone featured has been in the school for one year, so everyone's work is growing and changing,” said Emily Beveridge, second-year graduate student and a member of the public relations committee for the show. “The program is a three year
program, so it's an interesting stage to see.”
Although the exhibition features only visual art, the pieces displayed feature an array of mediums such as ceramics, sculpture, photos, and paintings. Gregory Hatch, a graduate student in the sculpture program, constructed his piece using objects and handmade felt.
“I wanted to portray something domestic, but also the sordidness of everyday interactions,” Hatch said of his piece, Hookups Happen at Home.
Josh Dannin, a graduate student in the printmaking program, has two pieces in the exhibition, And On They Went and No. 17,312.
“My work is basically rooted in post-war early American suburbia,” Dannin said. “The mass construction of the same thing over and over again and how that shapes us as people. It's the kind of piece where the subject matter is equally as important as what the subject matter is drawn onto or printed onto.”
Many of the artists whose work is featured in the exhibition will attend a reception for the exhibition Tuesday.
“The reception really is a time for the public to come in and talk to the artist,” Beveridge said. “Most of the people who are in the show will be at the reception.”
