The Athens Police Department is investigating a fire that occured at Walmart, 929 E. State St., early Tuesday morning.
Around 3 a.m., the Athens Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the superstore.
Michael Duchesne, spokesman for the State Fire Marshall’s office, said the office doesn’t have many details on the case now but is taking part in the investigation along side APD.
“Right now the cause is undetermined,” he said. “We were notified at 3:34 a.m.”
Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly posted on Facebook that the suspect “used an accelerant to start a fire in the paper tile section,” but neither the APD nor the State Fire Marshall’s office could confirm that information.
APD Lt. Charles Adams could not comment on the incident.
