Even though the new Thor film, Thor: The Dark World, will be released next month, most comic book film news lately has been centered on the new X-Men film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. iO9, an online publication that covers science and science fiction, interviewed Evan Peters, who will play the role of the mutant Pietro Maximoff, better known as Quicksilver. Peters is best known for staring in FX’s American Horror Story.
Peters said he loves his character because, after reading a few comics, he understands who he is as a character.
“I read one of the comics where he says that it’s like waiting at an ATM, when the people in front of you don’t know how to use it,” Peters said. “That’s how his whole life is; everybody is so slow to him. And he has the ability to go so fast, he’s just waiting for everybody to catch up.”
Peters said the film will have a slew of slow motion scenes, one of which allows viewers to see raindrops frozen in the air. I have always wanted to see more characters showcase their super speed.
After reading Flash, I noticed Quicksilver had the same problem. His ability makes people seem too slow and it creates a gap between him and the people that he wants to relate to because they do not understand why he is always in a rush. It is great that they might actually go more in depth into the character’s psychology, which would hopefully open up to a Quicksilver spin-off movie, especially because he is the son of Magneto and has not appeared yet in a film, so the backstory to that could be a great stand-alone production.
Quicksilver is a mutant who has the ability of super speed and is also the son of Magneto (portrayed by Michael Fassbender and Sir Ian McKellen). It will be interesting to witness how Quicksilver and Magneto interact with each other and see whether Quicksilver will have similar beliefs as his father toward mutant rights. In the comic books, the character was portrayed as both good and evil, going back and forth between the ideals of his father and what he thinks is right.
The studio has also decided to make the character more like the comics by giving him silver hair and a ’70s outfit. That will be interesting to see the character in a more old fashioned way and see how it turns out.
In 2015, the Avengers will also have Quicksilver as a new member. Because Quicksilver was in both the Avengers and the X-Men, both Marvel and 20th Century Fox have the rights to the character. In The Avengers, the speedster will be featured and played by Kick Ass’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It will be interesting to see how the character will be portrayed differently in the two universes since the films will premiere only a year apart. I just hope it does not end up like the last X-Men film.
