O'Rourke

Logan man pleads guilty to assault

A Logan man accepted a plea deal Wednesday to an indictment charging one count of felonious assault.

Issac O’Rourke, 25, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to a second-degree felony in which he beat up Joe Schultz, 49, and broke his jaw outside a Nelsonville bar Sept. 8.

The Nelsonville Police Department arrested O’Rourke and investigated the case, but officials could not be reached for comment by press time.

“Alcohol and a single bad decision has permanently changed the life of two families,” Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said in a news release. “The dangers associated with this behavior has lasting consequences.”

According to the release, O’Rourke will be eligible for judicial release after six months of his term and will depend on a good warden’s report.

He has since been incarcerated in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on a $350,000 bond, according to court documents, and will remain there.

The victim’s brother, Rudy Schultz, said he appreciates that O’Rourke “manned up,” according to the release.

“I believe this was an accident and wish there was a place other than prison for him,” Schultz said.
