An Athens County Common Pleas Court judge sentenced a Chauncey man to prison Monday after finding him guilty of breaking and entering into an Athens business.
Jerry Smith, 30, was sentenced to one year in prison by Judge L. Alan Goldsberry for theft and breaking and entering, both felonies of the fifth degree, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
But a news release from Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn’s office said that Smith did not act alone.
“On June 29, Smith and Brandon Master broke into KAL Electric and stole scrap aluminum wire from the business,” Blackburn said. “A sheriff deputy stopped the men for a traffic violation and discovered the scrap metal in their truck. They confessed they had stolen it from KAL Electric.”
On Oct. 7, Master will report to the Common Pleas Court for a final pretrial to address the incident.
Master is also awaiting sentencing for another theft case from the Athens Wal-Mart and another theft charge at Cochran Transportation Services in Athens.
The court documents did not include what he stole from the businesses.
Smith had been incarcerated at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail since July 17 on a $3,000 bond and was sentenced to prison without bail Monday.
