Shooting victim shares attack details with police

The Athens Police Department revealed Friday more information on the local man who was shot in the head last week.

On Sept. 17, APD received notification from O’Bleness Memorial Hospital staff regarding a patient, Jonathan Zesiger, 29, who received treatment for a gunshot wound.

Zesiger was transported to the hospital by a relative, according to an APD news release sent out Friday.

When officers arrived, Zesiger was being prepared for transfer to Grant Medical Center in Columbus for further treatment.

On Sept. 19, APD investigators drove to Columbus and interviewed Zesiger. He explained that he became involved in a physical altercation with unknown individuals and was shot. He then stated that the individuals took some personal property and then fled the scene.

APD is still trying to determine the location where the incident took place, according to the release.

“What we know is that we believe the incident happened Sunday evening, and he then went to the hospital Tuesday afternoon for treatment,” Athens Police

Chief Tom Pyle said in a previous Post article. “He at no time attempted to contact us, it was actually the hospital that contacted us. So, that’s how we got involved.”

Pyle said he still believes, based on limited information the department has received, that there is not an ongoing threat to the community.
