The Ohio women’s golf team is set to compete in the Lady Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky., at Arlington Golf Club Friday and Saturday.
The team is coming off of a two-week break from competition, but performed well in its most recent tournament in Ocala, Fla.
Ohio junior Kara Brinkmann looks to build off her career-best performance from the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational as she carded her best score of 69 in the first round, as well as setting a career-best three round total score of 225.
“I have a lot of confidence right now, I’m playing really good golf,” said Brinkmann, “I think our team has a lot of motivation going into this weekend, seeing that we could’ve gone so low.”
Ohio coach Kelly Ovington has a lot of confidence in her team this weekend, especially Brinkmann.
“Kara is playing so well right now. She just came off a great tournament, and she played really well there (Arlington GC) last year,” she said, “She likes the course a lot and her confidence level is really high, and hopefully she can win there. I would definitely put her up as a contender to win the whole thing.”
Ovington, along with others, believes that it is an advantage being able to play at a similar course to the team’s home course.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for us, the course is just like Athens Country Club in the fact that it’ (has) rolling hills, the greens are undulated, and you have to hit high approach shots into the greens,” said Ovington.
Brinkmann believes that they have an advantage this weekend because of their hard work in preparation for a course similar to Athens.
“Throughout practices in the last couple of days we have really focused on shots that we can see ourselves having at Arlington,” Brinkmann said, “I think that we’re one of the only other teams that has that benefit because Athens is so hilly, so I think that our last week of practice was very beneficial for EKU.”
