Courtside stabbing suspect indicted for felonious assault

An ongoing feud between fraternities led to the stabbing outside of Courtside in February.

Patrick Michael Barry, 21, was indicted by the Athens County Grand Jury on April 22 for one count of felonious assault stemming from the Courtside stabbing, according to an Athens County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office news release.

Barry, a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity, was charged with the stabbing of Michael Gallas, who belongs to the Pi Alpha Kappa fraternity.

“The only thing that we’ve been aware of is that there’s been an ongoing disagreement between his fraternity and the fraternity of the victim,” said Elizabeth Pepper, assistant prosecutor for Athens County. “We’re not aware of any fraternity war so to say.”

Barry, who pleaded not guilty, could face up to eight years in prison, Pepper said.

Judge Michael Ward set Barry’s bond at $10,000. His jury trial is scheduled to begin July 9, according to the release. The Athens Police Department conducted an investigation leading to the arrest.

“The Athens Police Department talked to several people who were present when it happened,” Pepper said. “They went through a lot of investigation.”

The Athens County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is offering a $250 reward to the first person that can present an unedited version of the recording showing the incident outside of Courtside to help with the case.

To qualify for the reward, the video must show the incident and not be a duplicate of the videos provided by Courtside.
