Bowling Green gained an early 9-0 lead against Ohio and didn’t look back from there en route to a 73-52 victory on the Falcons’ senior day.
The Falcons (19-9, 10-5 Mid-American Conference) contained Ohio’s most reliable and dynamic scoring threat, junior guard Erin Bailes. She had 33 points in Ohio’s last game against Akron, but was held to just six in this contest.
“(Bowling Green) stuck to Erin like glue,” Ohio coach Semeka Randall said. “They made her take tough shots. We had to just use her as a decoy to open it up for Shavon (Robinson).”
Robinson, a junior guard, found her stride late in the first half as she scored five straight points to cut the deficit to 35-19. But in an all too familiar fashion, any hopes Ohio (6-21, 1-14 MAC) had of gaining momentum were squelched.
The Falcons dominated the rest of the half and took a 44-23 lead into halftime. They outrebounded the Bobcats 19-11 and held a 14-point advantage in points in the paint.
“They knew how to get the ball inside,” Randall said. “They were very patient and poised with the basketball.”
Randall was issued a technical foul with 12:34 left in the game, in an attempt to energize her squad during the latest second-half scoring drought as the Bobcats were scoreless for more than five minutes.
Falcon junior guard Katrina Salinas drilled a three-pointer with six minutes left in the game to give Bowling Green a 67-42 lead and effectively put the game away.
“We need to get some rest, this has been a long five days for us, in terms of being on the road,” said Randall. “We just have to handle our situation and move forward and get ready for that Miami game (on Wednesday)”
