Court dismisses student's lawsuit against OU

The Ohio Court of Claims accepted the dismissal of an Ohio University student’s lawsuit against the university Thursday.

Deana Lewis, 18, filed a personal injury lawsuit against OU in November 2012. She claimed that she was injured after slipping in a campus laundry room.

Lewis filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit Feb. 7 that the court granted Thursday. OU did not respond to the motion for dismissal.

Lewis said in court documents that she was carrying a laundry basket and slipped on the recently mopped floor and landed on her head at about 11 a.m. Sept. 14.

She was disoriented for a period of time and had requested in the court order for OU to pay her $80 to cover a hospital visit, $10 for a doctor visit, $51.20 for an X-ray and $550 for “possible future medical expenses” for a total of $691.20, according to court documents.

OU’s Risk Manager George T. Wendt investigated Lewis’ claim and found that all but $60.66 of her medical expenses was covered by her insurance.

The court agreed to absorb all court costs after dismissing the lawsuit.
