1:50 a.m. update: Fire Chief Bob Troxel said the fire started at the top of the building, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The most extensive damage was on the roof. The fire was put out an hour after the fire department responded. No injuries were reported.
1:40 a.m. update: Firefighters have confirmed the fire is out.
1:30 a.m. update: Firefighters are detatching the firehouse and entering the cherry picker from the roof. The flames have been put out and there is no more smoke coming from the building. No officials have commented on the cause of the fire at this time.
At 12:20 a.m., the Athens Fire Department responded to a fire alarm that went off in the Research and Technology Center on Richland Avenue across from Bentley Hall. Flames spread atop the building and firefighters doused the flames.
Fire and police officials have not commented on the cause of the fire.
Firefighters have entered the top floor of the building. Smoke is still billowing from the roof of the building.
The building was built in 1948 and houses the offices of the Vice President for Research, External Relations, Research Communications, Research Compliance, Research and Sponsored Programs, the Graduate College and the Global Leadership Center, according to Ohio University's website.
