Many people — even supporters — said Charlie Adkins would have a hard time winning the seat for Athens County commissioner over the Republican incumbent.
However, at the end of the night it was Adkins who emerged victorious with 13,568 votes — or 56.5 percent — over Larry Payne’s 10,442 — or 43.5 percent.
Adkins credited the victory to his lifelong dedication to public service, and his salary will be $55,524.
“I think my whole career and service to the county over the years has paid off,” he said.
Adkins led a “smart” campaign by focusing on the issues throughout the election season, said Athens City Councilwoman Michele Papai, D-3rd Ward.
“Charlie ran a really good campaign and stuck to issues,” she said. “He made clear his stance on oil and gas in the county and that helped people (decide).”
Adkins’s daughter Jenny said his keys to election success were Adkins’s commitment to working hard on the campaign trail and a number of volunteers he met along the way.
“There were a lot of late-night hours,” she said. “We were fortunate enough to meet so many wonderful people willing to help.”
In the coming months before he takes office, Adkins said he will focus on educating himself about county government so he can improve Athens County right away.
“Before I’m done, I’ll know what every department does and I’ll make sure they’re doing what they should be doing,” he said.
Payne was unable to be reached for comment.
