Both candidates running for the county commissioner seat currently held by Mark Sullivan have made vast contributions to Athens County. Republican Randy Mace played an integral role in restructuring and modernizing Southeast Ohio’s 911 system and has years of governmental experience. Democrat Chris Chmiel has spurred Athens’ economy as a founder of the Ohio Pawpaw Festival and has been an area leader in energy efficiency.
The two candidates are clearly committed to Athens County — Mace is coming out of retirement to run for commissioner — and either would likely have a positive effect in office. However, we feel that the county will benefit the most by electing the more experienced candidate. The Post endorses Randy Mace for Athens County Commissioner.
Mace has proven his ability to get things done in Athens County. He has the experience and the knowledge to keep the government running efficiently and the ideas to make it work better. His leadership with 911 services speaks for itself, and his goals of cutting unnecessary spending to keep essential services funded are sound and levelheaded.
Although we feel that Chmiel could have done the job well, Mace will greatly benefit the county by returning to government service. And with Chmiel continuing to contribute to the economy through his work at the Pawpaw Festival and other local groups, Athens County should be in good shape for the next four years.
