The Bobcats golf team received bad news that affects the rest of the season.
Senior Byron Firestone withdrew from the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational after injuring his wrist late in the first day of play Monday.
“Byron tried to hit some balls this morning, but he said that his wrist was bothering him too much to play,” said Ohio coach Bob Cooley. “They’re saying it’s a slight sprain. Byron’s going to get it looked at tomorrow morning by the medical staff.”
Firestone was Ohio’s top performer Monday. He was tied for ninth place.
Cooley said the tournament’s surprise for Ohio was freshman Michael Engelman.
“He had a couple pretty good rounds, especially for this being his first tournament,” Cooley said. “He’ll definitely get some more chances coming up. He showed promise.”
Engelman took the role as the best performing Bobcat, turning in a 54-hole total of 226 and finished tied for 26th.
Senior Michael Lamping carded a three-round total of 228 and finished tied for 31st. Sophomores Thomas Leech (238), Andrew Mlynarski (246), and Will Stines (255) rounded out the Bobcats roster with finishes of 41st, 43rd and 44th respectively.
Indiana’s Kyle Perry won the tournament with a score of 208. Perry was the only golfer that turned in a under-par score.
Ohio will be back in action next Monday in Dayton participating in the Dayton Fall Invitational at the NCR Country Club. The University of Dayton will host the tournament.
“NCR is a very long and difficult course, but the guys have played there before so they know the basic layout,” Cooley said. “We need to work on hitting fairways this week, because the course is so long.”
