Mac Notebook: MAC teams rack up high averages

For the second straight week, Mid-American Conference teams that won their games averaged 40 points or more. Offensive outbursts aside, five teams, including Ohio, remain undefeated in conference play.

Kent State 41, Eastern Michigan 14

The Golden Flashes lead the MAC East with a 3-0 record, winning their most recent against the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

Kent State retained its perfect status largely because of the three touchdowns scored by redshirt junior running back Dri Archer. Archer, who leads the nation with 1,153 all-purpose yards, caught a five-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Spencer Keith, completed a 98-yard kickoff return and another 64-yard rushing score.

“We were able to take another kickoff back. Dri took one back 98 yards, and we’re covering kicks pretty well right now so that’s pleasing to see our special teams going to another level,” said Kent State coach Darrell Hazell.

Western Michigan 52, Massachusetts 14

UMass, unable to handle Western Michigan’s offensive onslaught, walked away from Saturday’s game against Western Michigan still without victory in its first season at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. The Broncos’ quarterback, junior Tyler Van Tubbergen, completed 23 of  28 passes for five touchdowns — each to a different target.

“He played well, and he can still play a lot better,” said Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit. “He’s getting better every week. We just have to continue to help him out … Everybody has got to have shared responsibility since we feel we’ve lost a great quarterback in Alex (Carder).”

The Minutemen could not find any kind of offensive rhythm, mustering only 218 yards of total offense. Redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Wegzyn was benched in favor of freshman quarterback A.J Doyle, who did not fare much better.

The Minutemen ran for two touchdowns, both of which came when the game had been put far out of reach.

Toledo 50, Central Michigan 35

The Rockets retained their unblemished record with an explosive second half Saturday, scoring 33 points against the Chippewas after the halftime break.

CMU senior quarterback Ryan Radcliff capped off a scoring drive with three minutes left in the game to pull his team within five points, but a Toledo field goal and interception from safety senior Jermaine Robinson sealed the win for the Rockets.
