The Ohio men’s golf team will compete in the 43rd Annual Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va.
Ohio will take on 15 other schools including Bowling Green, Miami, Ohio State and Toledo. The Buckeyes won this tournament the past two years and have won the tournament 19 times, the most of any participating school.
The Bobcats look to build on the end of last season when they finished in third place in the Mid-American Conference championship.
All but two of the players on the roster were part of the last year’s team. Of the nine players returning, four are seniors. Ohio coach Bob Cooley said he hopes that the seniors will help out the underclassmen.
The lineup that the Bobcats will compete with in Huntington will consist of Michael Lamping, Bradley Lucas, Byron Firestone, Connor Coldwater, and Curtis Goldsberry. Lamping will lead Ohio as captain.
“I think we could be a pretty good team this year,” Cooley said. “It really depends on how the younger kids fare, but we should be OK.”
Despite the team’s 15th overall finish in the previous year’s tournament, Cooley still has high praise for this event.
“It’s a great tournament on a beautiful and competitive course,” he said. “The tournament always attracts a good field and we’re happy to be starting our season there.”
The two-day tournament tees off at 8:30 a.m. Monday with 36 holes being played. The final 18 are scheduled for Tuesday.
