Historically, the Mid-American Conference has been a hotbed for talented quarterbacks like Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich and Ben Roethlisberger.
The current crop of quarterbacks might not be fodder for early-round NFL draft picks, but they can still garner some respectable attention.
Toledo 27, Bowling Green 15
The Rockets defeated their rival Falcons in the latest installment of the “Battle of I-75” Saturday. The teams have met every year since 1919, and Bowling Green holds a five-game edge in the series.
Junior quarterback Terrance Owens has led the Rockets’ offense this season, throwing six touchdowns and no interceptions thus far, including a 66-yard strike to receiver Alonzo Russell for the Rockets’ first score against Bowling Green. Owens finished with 303 yards passing on the day.
“He’s been consistent from the beginning of the football game,” said Toledo coach Matt Campbell. “One of the things that makes him special is that he has a chance to make all the throws and he has been in rhythm from the very beginning of the football game.”
Ball State 41, Indiana 39
For the second year in a row, Ball State defeated in-state opponent Indiana. Junior quarterback Keith Wenning threw for 222 yards and accumulated four scores in the game — three touchdown tosses and one catch.
The Cardinals surrendered the lead late in the fourth quarter on two touchdown tosses from the Hoosiers’ freshman quarterback Nate Sudfeld.
Wenning orchestrated the final drive, going three-for-five before setting up senior kicker Steven Schott, who nailed a 42-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.
“I was real proud of how our team came out in the third quarter,” said Ball State coach Pete Lembo. “Our offense really stepped things up. They were able to take a good lead into the fourth quarter.”
Northern Illinois 41, Army 40
Northern Illinois junior quarterback Jordan Lynch threw for 342 yards and accumulated five touchdowns (four passing and one rushing) in Saturday’s game against Army. Lynch’s 88-yard rushing touchdown gave the Huskies the lead at the end of the first quarter.
