Just like the saying “the show must go on,” Mother Nature will not thwart America’s pastime in Athens for the Southern Ohio Copperheads.
The right and left field fence of Bob Wren Stadium as well as the left field fence of the Ohio Softball Field were taken out Friday night because of high winds that were part of a storm that shut down Ohio University. The aluminum tube that holds the tarp in place went straight through the right wall of the baseball field and crashed into the left field fence of the softball field.
Besides damage to both fields, Rachel Figley, director of media relations and creative services for the Copperheads, said Copperheads equipment and signage was damaged as well.
Figley said the Copperheads are considering playing their games at Athens High School or transitioning to their road games for the next two weeks to keep up their record and standing in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League.
“We love having the Copperheads in a place that people can come and the community can enjoy but we obviously want to keep playing baseball,” Figley said. “So if we need to go to other fields and have away games for a while that’s what we will do but right now we are trying to sort through things, figure things out, keeping our options open and exploring what a solution to this is.”
Figley said the team will try to reschedule its home games and this dilemma will not hold the team back for long.
