Softball: 'Cats with the bats win big

In the second game of a doubleheader against Dayton on Tuesday, the Bobcat bench launched into a rendition of LMFAO’s hit song, “Shots” when catcher Lauren Gellerman stepped up to the plate.

Gellerman proceeded to belt a three-run home run — her second home run of the game.

Had the bench called every shot, as they did Gellerman’s, they would have been hoarse by the end of the day.

Ohio clubbed nine home runs against the Flyers to sweep the doubleheader and extend its winning streak to 15 consecutive games against Dayton.

Ohio scored a combined 25 runs in the two games, winning the first 10-7, and the second 15-8.

Ohio coach Jodi Hermanek said she wasn’t surprised by the offensive outburst because she believes the Bobcats have the type of lineup that can generate some pop.

“We do have that kind of lineup,” she said. “In the past we’ve had really structured lineups, really mature hitters, and we really think highly of this lineup this year.”

Both teams started the first game strong.  Ohio did not let up despite playing its fourth doubleheader in seven days.

Freshman Kaylin Clarke got the start for Ohio and gave up three runs in the top of the first.

But the Bobcats came right back and stuck for three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Dayton took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but that is when the fireworks began for the Bobcats.

Raven King, Alexandria Basquez and Chelsea Hortman each belted home runs as the Bobcats put seven runs on the board in the ensuing three innings.

Basquez said Ohio’s offense was firing on all cylinders.

“We just came out and put everything together and we had fun,” Basquez said. “We did a good job and finally clicked all around.”

In the second game of the day, Ohio picked up right where it left off in game one. The Bobcats erupted for a nine-run first inning leading to the seven-run win.

Gellerman, King and senior centerfielder Jillian Van Wagnen each hit home runs in the top of the first.

Junior pitcher Caitlin Colvin toed the rubber for the Bobcats. She started off well, but allowed six runs to score in the third.

The Flyers added two more in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough to match the Bobcat firepower.

Ohio scored three runs in bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to seal the deal.

King, who had three home runs on the day, said Ohio is starting to find its groove.

“As the season goes on, we always get more into a rhythm and I think finally it kind of showed today that everyone, top to bottom, can hit the ball over the fence,” King said. “It was awesome.”

The five home runs hit by the Bobcats set the school record for the most hit in a single game.

After recording two errors the first game, Ohio clamped down in the second game and didn’t allow a single error.

The Bobcats ended their current home stand with a 5-1 record, and will be on the road this weekend.
