Boys Basketball: Logan tops Nelsonville-York

With an away loss to the Logan Chieftains Tuesday night, Nelsonville-York dropped its second straight game and fell to 7-5 overall. The Buckeyes are hoping the slide will not last nearly as long as their five-game winning streak, which ended one week ago in a home loss to the Alexander Spartans.

The Buckeyes overcame bad shooting until the third quarter, when the Chieftains outscored them 19 to 5. The game was tied 26-26 at the half, but finished with a final score of 62-48 in favor of Logan.

“We didn’t play well enough to win,” said Nelsonville-York \ coach Jay Kline. “We just dug too big of a hole.”

“They had seven 3’s, we had one on the night. … We didn’t shoot the ball very well again.”

Logan was prolific from 3-point range on the night, hitting 50 percent of its shots from long range.

The Chieftains’ success from the perimeter neutralized strong inside games from Nelsonville-York’s center and power forward, Kyle Moore and Daniel Kline, who combined for 23 points.

The Buckeyes will need similar performances in the paint as well as from their backcourt if they hope to win their next game, on the road at Vinton County this Friday.

The Vikings are undefeated in the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division at 5-0 and beat the Buckeyes by eight in Nelsonville back on Dec. 13.

“We have to start playing with the confidence we had before,” Kline said. “Basketball is a funny game, and a season can have lots of ups and downs, so we just need to turn it around as soon as we can.”
