Overtime win gives 'Cats conference championship

Eight days ago, Kent State ruined the Bobcats' bout for a perfect run through the Mid-American Conference and handed them their only conference loss of the season.

With the conference championship on the line, the Bobcats were able to avenge last weekend’s loss by defeating the Golden Flashes in overtime, 2-1.

A 1-1 tie at the end of the first half gave way to a scoreless second, leading the teams to overtime.

Several minutes in, Cathryn Altdoerffer set up Brooke Edwards on a breakaway. Edwards buried the shot in the back of the net and the Bobcats’ celebration ensued.

“It feels awesome,” Altdoerffer said, who also assisted on Taylor Brown’s first-half goal. “All your work has paid off — finally. It just feels great.”

The Bobcats were forced to win the tournament without Louzeth Schutte, a fifth-year senior who was named the MAC Player of the Year. Despite Schutte’s absence, Ohio was able to beat Miami, 1-0 on Friday and followed up with the win over Kent State today.

The Golden Flashes opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first half when Carla Johl scored during a penalty corner. They would not enjoy the lead for long, however, thanks to Altdoerffer and Brown.

After taking the ball inside Kent State’s defense, Altdoerffer heard Brown call for it and sent it to her. Brown gathered the pass and unleashed a high shot past the goaltender to tie the score.

“(Altdoerffer) has worked so well in the midfield for us this year,” Ohio coach Neil Macmillan said. “She really does a good job of seeing her teammates, setting them up and really laying the ball into space for them to do what they need to do.”
