A rainy Palmer Place Fest remained relatively calm Friday, despite 49 arrests made throughout the evening by Athens Police and Liquor Control.
The party was shut down at about midnight by Palmer Place security and Athens Police, although the party was supposed to be shut down earlier.
“(The fest) was supposed to be shut down by 11,” said Palmer Place Security Guard Ryan Cunningham, adding that the fest was still fairly calm at that time.
Before the party was shut down, Liquor Control made 42 arrests, according to the Ohio Investigative Unit.
Athens Police made seven more arrests, mostly alcohol related, and those arrested were taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, according to an Athens Police news release.
Light rain was present throughout the fest’s afternoon hours and one Palmer Place resident, Jaren Fink, said he thought the rain could be reason that the party was slow throughout the day.
“It’s a lot of fun, but I’m a little disappointed with the (early afternoon) turnout,” said Fink, a junior studying special education.
Despite the slow afternoon, fest activity picked up at about 8 p.m., when the rain died down and the roar from the revelers and music could be heard several blocks away.
“Palmer Place is popping now,” Fink said.
Though arrests were made throughout the night, most partiers were able to have a good time without police officials getting involved.
One partier, Candice Wade, said the party was bumping by the end of the night but a lot of the other fests are crazier.
“Everyone is just having a good time,” said Wade, a junior studying nursing.
Several noise problems were addressed by on-view enforcement, but there were no serious offenses, according to the release.
