Local police officers arrested five partiers at a rainy and calm Oak Fest Friday.
Athens Police and Ohio University Police officers enforced the noise ordinance and shut down the party at midnight, according to an Athens Police news release.
Last year, local police officers arrested 11 people at the annual fest.
Lindsey Hamilton, a sophomore studying English, said she expected the block party to be more crowded.
“It’s really mellow instead of what Palmer(fest) is,” Hamilton said. “It seems everyone is in the back (yards) and following the rules.”
Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said the calm behavior was a result of increased police presence and the department’s communication campaign.
Posters urging students to be smart and safe were posted all around campus, Pyle said.
Eric Corbin, a junior studying math education, said there wasn’t anything going on most of the night.
“It’s a great place to pregame,” Corbin said.
