Car accident kills local woman

An Athens woman was killed in a car accident yesterday morning after her car slid off the road and hit a tree.

Gina R. Phillips, 50, died at about 8:15 a.m. yesterday when her 1998 Ford Explorer slid off the left side of County Road 20 in Athens County and struck a tree. Phillips was not wearing a seatbelt.

“I’m not sure of the specific injuries … she was sent to Montgomery County for an autopsy,” said Lt. Jeff Skinner of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.

Road conditions were damp, but that did not contribute to the accident, Skinner said. The road was closed for an hour and fifteen minutes, he added.

The closure did not affect many vehicles, because it is not a heavily traveled area, Skinner said.

There have not been problems with accidents on this area of road in the past, he said.
