Student wins lawsuit, OU to pay $525

Ohio University has to pay more than $500 in damages to an OU student as part of a lawsuit settled Thursday.

Mark Postel, a medical student, originally filed a complaint against the university in December after a clogged drain caused a parking lot near The Convo to flood, which damaged Postel’s car.

Postel had parked his car in the lot over the storm drain while attending class in Grosvenor Hall Oct. 26, according to court documents.

In his complaint, Postel asked for $4,651 to cover his car’s damaged electrical system, according to court documents.

Postel later amended the complaint, lowering the amount requested to $525, which would cover his insurance deductible plus the $25 filing fee.

The Ohio Court of Claims ordered OU to pay Postel $525 in damages. The court found the damage to Postel’s car was caused by OU’s negligence to maintain the conditions of the parking lot, according to court documents.
