Board of Trustees: Trustees endorse academic reviews

Ohio University Board of Trustees’ Academics Committee decided yesterday to recommend accepting the academic reviews of eight schools and departments.

The academic reviews are part of the reaccreditation process for the schools and departments. The committee recommended that the board accept reviews of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Center for International Studies, the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, physics and astronomy, environmental and plant biology, political science, sociology and anthropology, and history departments.

“Each program is viable,” Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit said. “And each (review) lists both strengths of the program and also concerns. It’s a rigorous process.”

Trustee Norman DeWire said normally there are about 20 academic reviews a year, but because of a focus on the quarters-to-semesters curriculum transition, there were only eight.

“We expect the number will pick back up again next year,” he added.
