After an 0-4 start to the season in South Carolina, the Bobcats will try to improve in the other Carolina.
Ohio travels to Davidson, N.C., for four games this weekend. The Bobcats will play Lehigh (twice), Davidson and Lafayette with the first two games Friday.
The Bobcats got off to a similar slow start last year, and the negative trend is something coach Joe Carbone said always happens for spring athletes.
"Always going to get off to a slow start - every sport at Ohio University in the spring is going to get off to a slow start," Carbone said.
Recent inclement weather has not provided ideal conditions for the team, as Wednesday's practice was the first time they have been outside. But Carbone said his team makes no excuses.
Ohio was outscored 35-11 by Furman last weekend. Despite the opposition's offensive production, Carbone said he liked what he saw from his pitchers.
"I thought (Seth) Streich and (Ben) Trimbur pitched very well on Friday," Carbone said. "Streich is up to 93 (mph), he's throwing strikes and Trimbur struck out seven guys and didn't walk anybody."
The pitching staff is young enough to begin with, and with senior Jason Moulton recovering from arm surgery, Carbone said he knows there will be struggles.
"This is not panic time for me or my coaches when we give up some runs," Carbone said.
Ohio practiced fundamentals this week, as Carbone said it would be important to play intelligent baseball.
"Some of the things we didn't do well on cutoff relay just get to our position quick enough - some two-strike hitting ... pitch selection and get deeper in counts," Carbone said. " I hope we get better on some things we went over."
During the early part of the season, some of the fundamentals are slow to come back because the team does not have the benefit of live action, Carbone said.
