The Latino Heritage Museum will be coming to Ohio University today as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
It displays artifacts
pictures and audio visual material of Hispanics. It is an exhibit called 'Famous Firsts by Hispanic Heritage.' It represents firsts in politics science art and other areas
said Winsome Chunnu, the assistant director of the Multicultural Center.
This event has been in the works since late this summer when the Latino Heritage Museum contacted Chunnu, who passed the information on to Linda Daniels, the director of the Multicultural Center.
Typically we do a speaker
but the speaker is from one country
and their message may not apply to those from the other Latino countries
Daniels said. We felt that this exhibit would give students a broad range of Latino culture.
Daniels hopes that students will find out more about Latino culture from the exhibit.
I think students will find out about the Latino culture and see the impacts that Latinos have made in the United States, Daniels said. The thing about the Latino culture is that people are not just Hispanic, but they are from different countries such as Spain, Nicaragua, Chile, etc. This exhibit will give them a broad understanding of Latino culture because it is a culture from many different countries.
Chunnu said that it cost about $2
000 to bring the Latino Heritage Museum to OU. The event is being financed and sponsored by the Multicultural Center.
Chunnu said she thinks the exhibit will show a different side to Hispanic Heritage Month.
For Hispanic Heritage Month, we usually have a speaker, but we are looking for new ideas. This traveling museum, along with having a speaker that speaks to the topic, gives you a vast, plethora of Latino, Hispanic culture, Chunnu said.
It's a time for different groups that are impacting this group, but also a showcase of the talents and contributions made by this group.
Sebastian Osorio
a senior studying mechanical engineering and president of the Latino Student Union
said he thinks the exhibit will showcase Hispanic Heritage Month.
I am really excited. Hopefully a lot of people will come through and learn about Hispanic culture, Osorio said. I feel we are the minority among the minorities and that this exhibit will give us our time to shine.",",3,Culture,",",",",",",IF YOU GO,WHAT: Latino Heritage Museum
