Senate favors standardized classes

Introductory level classes - especially those within a series - need to be standardized, said Ohio University Student Senators at last night's meeting.

Using the vast topic variety among English 151 classes as an example, senator Annie Marsico explained the need for more standardization within courses that are prerequisites for future courses.

Senators adopted a resolution pushing for the standardization among introductory classes after a lengthy debate.

Although a standardization would involve faculty working together to develop syllabi covering the same material, senator Bryan O'Shea said that making all subject matter the same standardizes what should be taught

not how it should be taught.

In other senate news:

-Senators also adopted resolutions concerning various changes in Student Activities Commission funding application forms. The resolution clarified organizations' responsibilities and SAC's funding decisions.

-Senator Jen Price introduced a resolution to encourage the creation of a centralized off-campus housing office or coordinator that would counsel students in finding and preparing for independent living.

While an office is not feasible to be up and running next year such a program would benefit students within the next few years, Price said.

-Also at the meeting, Ohio University Provost Stephen Kopp addressed senators about the Comprehensive, Integrated, Institutional Planning Process, which will go live July 1. The process involves four committees preparing for OU's future over the next five years. University officials as well as student senate members comprise the committees.

With budget and funding as a main concern, each nine-member committee will focus on a different aspect of maintaining OU's mission statement while at

the same time integrating technology in the classrooms and increasing university enrollment and retention.

We're really trying to align everything that's going on in the university right now Kopp said.
