A car caught fire across from The Convo around 7:30 last night after the driver smelled smoke and pulled over. No injuries were reported.
Pat Vaughan, 56, an Ohio University alumnus from Cuyahoga Falls was driving south on Richland Avenue when he smelled smoke.
At first he thought it was a cigar, but then he saw smoke coming from the radio, he said.
I thought I had better get to a gas station pretty quick
Vaughan said.
Vaughan turned right on Shafer Street and pulled into the parking lot by the Ohio University Visitors Center. He got out of the car, called 911 and within a minute the car was in flames.
I didn't expect it to be such a big deal he said. When it went it really got going.
Vaughan said he was glad that firefighters were able to save his 12-string guitar - which was in the trunk - after they put out the fire.
Vaughan was visiting Athens to see an old friend. He graduated from OU in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication.
