On Monday, an individual used a fake $20 to pay for food at the Taco Bell in Nelsonville, 763 Chestnut St.
A manager caught the counterfeited bill while counting the money the night of April 5. The false bill looked suspicious to the manager, and she used a special pen marker to confirm that the bill was phony, Nelsonville Sgt. Patrolman Tom McKnight said.
The false note did not have any of the security markings that the new $20 has, but because it looked so authentic, the bill could pass without question at night, he said.
While the police are investigating, McKnight said, he wanted citizens and businesses to be vigilant and to report any information they might have about who used the fake money.
We want to inform businesses and keep the public informed that [counterfeit bills] are floating around and to watch out for them
he said.
The Nelsonville Police have investigated several other similar cases in the past year. Recently, two men were convicted of trying to pass $2000 worth of money at the 33 Carryout in Nelsonville in October of 2003, McKnight said. The police are unsure if the two cases are related. 17
