Three arrested on drug charges

Two Ohio University students and one Athens resident were arrested early yesterday morning on drug-related charges after police found one pound of psilocybin mushrooms, a quarter pound of marijuana, more than $3,000 in cash and two firearms.

It was not disclosed where the items were found.

Mark Perone, 80 E. State St. Apt. 5, and Ryan T. Green, both OU students, were arrested yesterday, according to an OU Police Department report.

According to the report, Green is a resident of 115 Lancaster St., but the OU Directory lists him as a freshman in Atkinson House, 130 S. Green Dr. Perone also is listed as a freshman.

Athens resident Benjamin Haws, 115 Lancaster St., also was arrested, according to the report.

All three were arraigned in Athens Municipal Court yesterday.

Perone and Haws were charged with trafficking more than five times the allowed amount of psilocybin mushrooms, a Schedule I controlled substance.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency classifies controlled substances under five schedules. Schedule I substances include heroin, LSD and marijuana. Trafficking a Schedule I substance is a second-degree felony.

Green was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell, which is a fifth-degree felony.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation by the department of trafficking of mushrooms at and around OU. Future charges and arrests are expected as a result of this investigation.
