Wrestling looks to make statement at weekend Quad

The Ohio wrestling team has no intentions of getting off to a slow start this season.

The Bobcats travel to their first scoring meet of the season this weekend when they head to the Edinboro Duals on Saturday, a meet that the team is looking to win, coach Joel Greenlee said.

I think you want to go out and make a statement early in the year about what you want to get accomplished and what kind of team you are

he said. But I obviously want to go out and get some wins as well.

Ed Willis (174-pound weight class) said the key to a victory could be the conditioning of the team.

We have a lot of tough kids that are on the team now he said. I think we're all in good shape and we all have a good shot at beating some good people. It all depends on if they come out and wrestle.

Willis said because it is still early in the season, however, he will not be wrestling with the same attitude as he will toward the end of the season.

The tournaments the first two months of the season are kind of like practices for the end of the year

he said. So I can go out there

try new stuff and wrestle as many people as possible.

This attitude reflects the team's main focus of the season: to win the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Picked second in the MAC preseason, this team is the strongest Ohio has fielded in years, said Jon Spires (141).

(Being picked second) is gonna motivate us

he said. But that's probably where we should've been picked

because Central Michigan has done better than us the last couple years. But

with guys being a little older

the tournament being at home and we just wanting to win a MAC Championship

we definitely have that as a team goal.

The Edinboro Duals begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in Edinboro, Penn. Ohio will face Purdue, Findlay and host-team Edinboro.
