In the wake of Fall Quarter exam week, most Ohio University students flock to their pre-collegiate homes to spend the six-week winter break. But a few students stick around Athens to work, study or train.
OU senior Amy Wells said she is staying here this December mainly for the employment.
I will be working at Alden Library and Lam's Garden restaurant
Wells said. I worked for the library my freshman year so whenever they need help like over the summer or over winter break
I help them out if I'm around.
Wells said she enjoys the chance to work extra hours at her jobs, and she is able to return home for holidays because her family lives in Marietta, less than an hour from Athens.
If I lived in Cleveland or something
I don't think I'd stay
Wells said.
OU junior Marissa Bardige said her employers at Kroger affected her decision to spend break in Athens.
I have a part-time job here. If I left
I would lose my job
Bardige said. She plans to visit home in Lexington, Ohio, only for Thanksgiving and her December birthday.
Others, such as OU senior Andy Capizzi, are staying to take a class during Winter Intercession.
I'm just getting my Tier III out of the way
Capizzi said. I heard it's easier over winter break.
Several Ohio sports teams require athletes to remain on campus to train during break. Senior swimming captain Jason Folt said the team spends six or seven hours each day practicing.
All we do is swim
sleep and eat
Folt said. I wish I could go home sometimes
