JohnnyFrankCranks is sure to enhance the local music scene with its energetic beats. Audiences will not be able to keep from grooving when they hear this bluesy funk rock live.
JohnnyFrankCranks includes Ohio University junior guitarist Jacob T. Reid; OU senior guitarist and bassist Brandon Swonger; OU senior bassist, guitarist and harmonica player Brendan Dane; OU senior drummer Elden Robert Rowland; and OU senior alto-saxophonist and percussionist Mike Krakovski.
Reid, Dane and Rowland knew each other from high school and met Reid and Krakovski through classes and residence halls their freshman year at OU.
JohnnyFrankCranks members said when they formed they all were instrumental. After much practicing in the various basements of family and friends, the band hit the Athens bar scene Fall Quarter of last year.
We started out acoustic
but once we made enough money to get equipment for shows we played live Rowland said.
Over time they became comfortable with the idea of vocals, and now all members share the singing spotlight. Rowland said whoever produces the lyrics usually sings the song, using the other members as back-up vocals. Members said the growing collectiveness has added to the cohesiveness of their band.
Not just one person comes up with everything anymore
Krakovski said. Now someone gets an idea and it develops from there.
While the band members tossed out genres that inspried them like rock, reggae and funk, they were hesitant to elaborate further on their sound.
You can't take an unbiased approach when it's your own work
Reid said. It's like trying to critique your own artwork.
It's a collaboration of everyone's individual styles
Swonger said.
As for the birth of their name, well, that story was a bit more complicated.
A combination of inside jokes gave way to the moniker. Although the members say they tried to change the name a hundred times
some conflict would arise like another little-known band already using their choice. Finally, they decided to stick with the original title.
Everything else just seemed forced
Krakovski said.
Currently the band is working on recording a full-length album. However, JohnnyFrankCranks has three demos behind them: Free Pizza, Irie in A-Town and Pass Out, which they have handed out free of charge at random shows.
Members said future aspirations include possibly relocating to either New York City or somewhere out West after they graduate.
I think it would be awesome if we moved out to some city and just rocked the scene
Reid said.
We'll stick around as long as it's fun
Rowland said.
