Information wanted in hit-and-run case

Editor,

We understand since the Halloween block party, there have been numerous articles and letters in the newspaper concerning the incidents of that weekend and changes to come. This is to share one more serious incident and request your help in identifying the individual involved. On Saturday, Nov. 1, between 2:30 and 3 a.m., our daughter and her friend were hit, dragged and run over by a black Ford Expedition while crossing Court Street. The driver was traveling north on the one-way street when he came to a sudden stop, placed his SUV in reverse and backed down the street striking our daughter and her friend. Despite the protesting of bystanders on the street, including one man's striking the passenger side window, the driver continued to drive backward dragging these innocent young women. After running over them, he sped off into an alley. Unfortunately, the Athens Police Department has not been able to positively identify the driver of the black Ford Expedition.

Our family and friends have been deeply affected by this incident. The pain lingers and deepens as we continue to reach dead ends in finding the man who did this. Although efforts have been made, we seem to have hit a wall of it happens all the time. This may be the case, but it should not and does not have to be. As citizens, we do not have to accept this type of criminal behavior.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, our daughter's and her friend's lives were threatened by this reckless behavior. If this individual is not brought to justice, the it happens all the time will continue to be heard. Please come forward with any information you may have that could help identify the driver of the SUV involved in this incident. Please provide your information to the Athens Police Department at 740-592-3313 or Crime Solvers Anonymous at 740-594-3331.
