Ohio University's Graduate Student Senate (GSS) is working to help returning graduate students start off with a clean slate.
Graduate senators adopted a resolution in September supporting a change in the segmented transcript policy. The change would give graduate students who leave school and return six years or more later to complete their degree the opportunity to do so with a clear transcript. In other words, the student's previous grades would be disregarded when calculating their accumulative grade point average.
The segmented transcript policy is offered only to undergraduate students now.
Marilyn Poeppelmeyer, chairwoman of the graduate council, said the university is considering changing the policy. She said the council will make a decision by Winter Quarter.
An unfair and unreasonable burden is placed on older students if they are judged by grades more than 10 years old
and younger students are not said graduate student James Wynn, who initially petitioned for the policy. Wynn left graduate school for personal reasons and said he was perturbed when he realized OU's policy.
Graduate Student Senate President Michael Willits said, The segmented transcript policy is a sort of second-chance policy. It is currently receiving both positive and negative support and we are pushing for it.
In addition to the segmented transcript policy, GSS is currently working on two new grant programs: the Grant for Original Work and the Travel Grant. Willits said the group also works on helping students with job placement, such as finding English majors jobs other than teaching.
A coffee hour which would allow students to talk about their research is a possibility for the group next quarter
said Michaela Meyer, vice president for Committees & Legislative Affairs of GSS.
